The 1909 Alco 40-HP Runabout Sold for $280,500 by Gooding & Company at Amelia Island
In May 2011, I had the opportunity to visit the famous basement garage of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum. Among the many spectacular automobiles in the basement was a 1909 Alco Runabout.

In Search of Alcos: #11 The 1912 Alco Convertible Touring Car Stored in a Rehoboth Barn
Over the last four months, VanderbiltCupRaces.com has attempted to document the Alco "12"- the 12 reported existing rebuilt and restored cars made originally by the American Locomotive Company in Providence, Rhode Island. In Search of Alcos: #9 1913 Alco Model 6 Berline Limousine at Crawford Auto Aviation Museum
Over the last three months, we have attempted to document the Alco "12"- the 12 existing rebuilt and restored cars made originally by the American Locomotive Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The ninth Alco is a 1913 Alco Model 6 Berline Limousine at the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, A Collection of Western Reserve Historical Society, in Cleveland, Ohio.

In Search of Alcos: #7 1912 Alco Touring Car Owned By Andy Oldman
Over the last 25 years, it has been widely written that there are only 12 original, rebuilt and restored Alcos that exist in museums and private collections. As requested by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I have been attempting to track down the Alco "12". As noted by Roberto Rodriguez of the Seal Cove Auto Museum located on Mount Desert Island, Maine, Alco #7 is owned by Andy Oldman of New London, New Hampshire:

In Search of Alcos: #6 1912 Alco Touring Car at Fondation Berliet, Lyon France
Over the last 25 years, it has been widely written that there are only 12 original, rebuilt and restored Alcos that exist in museums and private collections. As requested by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I have been attempting to track down the Alco "12". As noted by Phil last week, Alco #6 can be found at Fondation Berliet in Lyon, France.

In Search of Alcos: #5 1912 Alco 7-Passenger Touring Car at the Nethercutt Collection
Over the last 25 years, it has been widely accepted that there are only twelve original, rebuilt and restored Alcos that exist. As requested by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, I am trying to track down the Alco "12". As noted last week by Peter Becker, the fifth Alco can be found in the Nethercutt Collection in San Sylmar, California.

In Search of Alcos: #4 1913 Alco Convertible Touring Car Formerly at the Milhous Museum
In celebration of the centennial of the Inaugural Indy 500 Race this May, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is currently looking for cars representing the 24 manufacturers that competed in 1911 and were built from 1911 to 1961. Since American Locomotive Company ceased its Alco car production in 1913 and there are only 12 original, restored and rebuilt Alcos existing today, finding an appropriate Alco car to participate in this historic Indy car show is a real challenge.
